The fact that Mickey had to go to some shady doctor when he was ill late in the '61 season raises a troubling question : why wasn't Dr. Sidney Gaynor, the Yankees' team physician, able to take care of No. 7's medical needs? One would assume that, even back in the days of the Reserve Clause, a team's front office would have had a financial interest in protecting the health of their biggest star.
