Info about the great Mickey Mantle. Goes a little long at the end, but ends on a very funny word. Also some Buck O'Neil in there. From Ken Burns' Baseball.

Mick was the best power hitter EVER. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa are all paper dolls when compared to Mick. Bonds on creatine = 756 HRS. Mick on creatine = 756 FOOT HRS. :)

even todays bulked up creatine hgh cheats cant hit it as far as mickey could--from both sides of the plate to boot

He experienced it all. Along with Roger Maris, they made the Yankees something everyone loved, not just New Yorkers. When he connects, it sounds like a railroad tie snapping in half. The shot out of Griffith Stadiul as well as the rocket off the facade at Yankee Stadium (18 inches from going over the triple deck, out of the stadium) would make Ruth, Foxx or anyone else wince. Todays Yankees and the prima donnas who have entirely different stories and attitudes? What a joke...

Very cool. Mickey Mantle was to me, a kickass guy with a great life story. As I live in Dallas, I've stopped by his grave to say hello. His story included everything:* humble beginnings. * suffering the loss of family.* significant mental & physical pain throughout life.* Hero status in New York City, where usually they drag people down. Everyone loved Mickey Mantle.* Long standing baseball records.* Back to pain & misery while regretting his hard living, right to the end.

Center field was 463 ft. in those days. Left center was 457 ft. Much larger than today's ball parks.

Whitey Ford conservatively estimated Mantle hit at least 200 balls to the warning track in Yankee Stadium's huge fly ball eating center field. Every one of those balls would have been home runs in any other field in major league baseball.

Ya, can you image how many more homers he would have had if he was injury-free, pumper iron and didn't drink like he did.
